Penacre Willow

Vanessa is a willow weaver based on the lizard peninsula in Cornwall. She is inspired by nature and social history.
Shortly after moving to Cornwall a neighbour told her that the willow growing in her garden was used for making lobster pots and baskets. This sparked her curiosity and after some research she decided to have a go at basket making and in 2016 she made her first, which she still has today.
As well as growing 25 varieties of willow she also forages local plant fibres. Studying techniques from around the world and their use of materials has encouraged her to explore what materials she can source locally.
This craft is one of the oldest crafts, there is evidence of basketry being practiced for thousands of years. It is challenging and therapeutic all at the same time.
Vanessa's aim is to make beautiful and functional pieces in a sustainable way.
